In the midst of studying for my Italian Midterm, it occurred to me how lucky I have been as a student. Not only have I been able to receive an education, but also because I have had the ability to study multiple languages. As it is midterm week, there have been a lot of complaints going around about having to study which obviously is not the most exciting activity but, regardless of what your major is, everyone has a full schedule right now. Between our class demands, student organizations, and internships it can feel like there's barely enough time to sleep, much less explore an interest. However, college is meant to be a time of exploration; a time to formulate an idea of who you want to be now and after college.
One way to explore an interest in a different culture while fulfilling school requirements is by taking a language, as being a part of the Arts & Sciences College I am required to take three semesters of it, but it is an excellent experience for anyone. I chose Italian, after taking three years of French in high school and traveling to France with my Humanities class I was ready for something a little different, leading me to choose the Italian language and culture. Clearly I have a taste for the languages of love, but everyone needs some love in their everyday lives!

Keep in mind, language courses in college are fun but challenging, as they're more interactive than high school courses and require more out of class work but, it will be worth it. Because your professors expect more effort you will begin to understand that learning a new language is sink or swim, you either participate in conversation activities and work through the homework, or you flounder. It may sound like too much work but growth opportunities usually do.
Give yourself a chance to embrace a growth opportunity and open your mind to a new perspective by exploring another language, culture and way of life. By learning a new language you broaden your view of the world and just might reevaluate what is important to you, and you may just get inspired to integrate some foreign elements into your daily life.
Do you study a foreign language? Are you planning a trip across the pond in coming months or years? Leave me a comment!
Until next time,
Arrivederci!
