As an individual, I am the first to say that I make my fair share of mistakes on a daily basis. However, now that I am coming to the start of my junior year in college I have started viewing some of these mistakes as blessings in disguise. My first year and a half of college felt as if I was floundering. I had picked my major, begun to grasp what it entailed and yet things weren't quite clicking because I hadn't identified who it was that I wanted to be as strategic communication student and professional. Strat Comm is such a versatile field that verges into so many industries that in order to feel fulfilled you have to identify who it is that you are as a communicator; what are you good at and how you are going to use it.
After going through almost a year long program in STEP (Second year Transformational Experience Program), a program still in its early years through the university, being a participating member in PRSSA as well as Her Campus, I finally felt like I had an idea of where I was going. I wrote my proposal for my fellowship project and nailed down the specifics of my summer internship. I felt like I finally had a direction.

College has been a process of trial and error learning for me in every way, but the best lesson so far has been the discovery that I am a self starter. When I struggled with my weight again and made my own diet plan, cooking my own meals to be a little healthier than the day before, I was a self starter. When I kept studying, going to tutoring and struggling with my business math class, I was a self starter. When I came up with a fellowship project that few people understood the point and passion behind, I was a self starter. Being a self starter does not mean the you are already living your dream, it means that you get up everyday and keep fighting for it. It means that you haven't given up on the life you want for yourself, the one you know you deserve for yourself.
As one of the best lines in the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" states: "Never lose your childish innocence. It's the most important thing." Being a self starter now means to me that holding on to that innocent hope is what drives me to become even more than I was yesterday while embracing who I am today. Mistakes and daily catastrophes included.
