Today is the official dawn of a new semester, postponed by two snow days, and with it brings a flurry of new classes, books, ideas, and people. It’s easy to get caught up in the changes and to experience stress; what college student hasn’t?
In a recent conversation with my dad we were discussing TED talks and in particular, one that he listened to that advised people whenever they are in need of confidence to stand very tall with the arms spread wide apart above their heads and legs spread apart for at least a minute before a big test, speech, event, etc. This might sound and feel silly but in actuality raises your testosterone levels and helps lower anxiety. If you’re looking for a more subtle way to enact this and utilize this body language whilst encountering a situation, the “Wonder Woman” pose is for you. A La Beyoncé, you stand legs spread apart with your hands planted on your hips with your shoulders back and attitude on.
As a Communication major, public speaking is naturally a part of the deal. I don’t always get nervous before speaking, but once I go up before groups of people whom I’m not used to speaking in front of I get shaky and try to mask it from being apparent in my voice.
This semester is already becoming full of new classes, events, and other plans. Therefore, a personal goal of mine throughout this semester will be to channel my inner Queen Bey and strike the Wonder Woman pose whenever I feel my confidence wavering.
